We purchased Red (Tuatahi Song x Sky’s the Limit (Arab)) nearly 3 years ago as a green 6 year old to bring on for show-jumping.

2009/10 was an awesome season for my son, James, in his last season on ponies with Red.

It was slow start, but when they got going, they were up there with the best in the country. In fact, several people have come up to me and said they thought they were the most consistent combination on the Pony Grand Prix circuit.

It started with a win in a 1* Grand Prix at Central Hawke’s Bay A & P Show and was closely followed by 2nd in another 1* and a 3rd in a 2* the next day in Taranaki to finish runner-up for the Grand Prix Points Award. This was closely followed by a 3rd in their first 3* Grand Prix at Tauranga.

At Taupo Christmas Classic, they were in their prime. They won their first class, the 1.25m Accumulator with the Joker at 1.40m. They were then 4th the next day in the 3* Grand Prix (1.35m) and 2nd the following day in the 22-fence 2* Derby (1.25m)with a double clear, just pipped by a micro-second.

Success continued at Gisborne Champs, the first day they won the 1.20m class, and repeated the performance on the 2nd day in the other 1.20m. They were all set, fit and raring to go for the 3* Grand Prix on the Sunday. Then the rain came, it flooded the showgrounds, yards, everything, and the show was called off.

Red unfortunately caught a chill and did not recover properly until after HOY, which was a shame as he was a leading contender for the Pony of the Year Title.

Red is a pony who rises to the occasion and he is only plaited for the big classes, which helps hype him up. He struts into the arena as if to say “Look At Me, I Am Here".   He is full of presence, very intelligent, verging on arrogant, but rarely fails to come up with the goods. Sometimes he is too smart for his own good. He always knows where James is on a showground because he can recognise the sound of his motorbike and his ears are always pricked listening in James’ direction.

Red has been an absolute joy to know and train and now must be sold, because James is too old to ride him as a pony.
