Morgans at the Horse of the Year Show – 2004.

The biggest equestrian event in NZ, this years Horse of the Year Show held in Hastings in March,  attracting 2000 horses competing in thirteen different disciplines.   Included in these entries were nine Part Morgans, all of which won or placed in their sections.

Competing in the show jumping,  where the classes had very large entries,  were Forrest Song (Tuatahi Song x Exceptionnel Cat),  horse ring & Limerick Black Samba (Taproot Paul Revere x Sky),  pony ring.

Forrest Song began well,  coming eighth in Class 7, a 1.20m class, in which there were 77 entries!   Then in the Rookie Young Rider qualifier,  with owner/rider Amanda Pethybridge,  he finished in third place out of 86 starters!   Next day the Rookie Young Rider of the Year final was held,  jumped over a big 1.20m course,  & in this Forrest Song finished in a creditable fourth place.   A great result for this small 7 year old Anglo Morgan.

Meanwhile in the pony ring 6 year old Limericks Black Samba was also showing what super jumpers Morgans are.   In the Open Pony 1.05m class (88 starters), he & his owner Natasha Muollo finished in fifth place, & were then fourth in the Open Pony 90cm class.

Another pony who had a very successful show was Mt Tulloch Royal Command (JMF Royal Secret x Belle),  who competed in the Showhunter & Show Pony rings.   He & rider Michele Stowe were 4th in the Welcome Pony Hunter –60cm, then won the First Year Registered – 60cm class,  placed third in the Open – 70cm class, & 5th in the Open – 85cm.   In the Newcomer Show Pony  ring, he was third in the Pony over 138cm to 148cm, & was also third in the Paced & Mannered class.

Command’s brother Mt Tulloch Royal Moss (JMF Royal Secret x Belle), also competed at the show, and received 4th place in the Rising Star Hunter Pony, with owner/rider Andrea Hill.

Also competing in the Showhunter Pony ring was Wild Orchid, whose registered Morgan name is Mt Tulloch Royal Fleur (JMF Royal Secret x Star).   In her early years Fleur was a TV star in the Hercules & Xena TV shows,  in which she sometimes pulled a chariot with her brother Logan.   For the last few years she has been a busy pony club & jumping pony.   At the Horse of the Year she was 2nd in the Welcome Pony Hunter – 85cm, (43 entries) & 5th in the Open – 85cm, (47 entries), ridden by Courtney Brown.

Another Anglo Morgan competing at the show was Jameel Himaar (JMF Royal Secret x King’s Charm), ridden by Zavra Roxburgh, who competed in Dressage.   They came 5th in Novice Horse 2.5.

Kerrie Carter took Mirage (Tui’s Nimrod x High-Tail It), her two year old Morab filly, all the way from Tahuna, near Morrinsville,  to compete in the In Hand Arab section of the show, which was judged by Princess Alia Al Hussein of Jordan. In her usual fine form, Mirage was judged Junior Champion Part Arab, & also won the Junior Classic Movement & Classic Head.

Two Part Morgans took part in the Carriage Driving events. Mt Tulloch Royal Honour (JMF Royal Secret x Christabel) was not to be out done by her two younger brothers, Command & Moss. She & her owner/driver Sandy Hooper were 6th in the Snow Bennett Memorial Scurry & 5th overall.   Rosemary Smith drove her young pony Mt Tulloch Royal Sprite (JMF Royal Secret x Miss Millicent), & finished 6th overall.

Congratulations to all the above horses & their owners.
